The Brief.
Corporate family days are quite big in Oman. It has often been used as a way for employers to show how much they appreciate their people. It is a great opportunity for the employees and their families to meet and get to know each other.
Some companies look into having annual family days as this tends to be more rewarding for their employees and their families at a modest cost.
For Sohar Aluminium, it’s all about celebrating a day of fun and festivities with their employees and their families with a variety of activities for all ages. Family day events reward staff for their part in the success of Sohar Aluminium.
This would give the employees a chance to see their colleagues in a different light by having a friendly yet enjoyable or sometimes wacky competition with one another.
Objectives.
The Big Idea.
IT’S A THEME PARK IN SOHAR!
ONE DAY ONLY
To meet these objectives, we created a fun-filled, exciting atmosphere for the Sohar Aluminium family day - a Disney-esque theme park or Sohar's Enchanted Kingdom. From the moment they entered, the “theme park” was filled with a variety of entertainment and activities: fairground rides, performers, games for children and adults, as well as trainings and workshops.
Sohar's Enchanted Kingdom
In line with its objectives, we recommended that Sohar’s Enchanted Kingdom looked and felt like a theme park equipped with fun rides, games and entertainment. We did this by turning the unused parking lot extension into a theme park.
There were wandering acts – from jugglers, stilt-walkers, fire-eaters and of course, their favourite assorted character mascots. There was an assortment of game zones to accommodate the multinational Sohar Aluminium family, appropriate for various age groups. On top of the games and wandering acts, we had an evening entertainment for the whole family. Additionally, we had live cooking demos broadcasted on various screens all over the park. We also invited the Environment Society of Oman to give pointers on the importance of being environmentally conscious – from plastic bag usage to waste segregation.
Crèche services were made available for the very young.
It would not have been a theme park if we did not have fairground rides, whilst ensuring that all event elements met Sohar Aluminium’s standards of safety.
What actually won us this event is our theme park concept as well as its designs and colours. The only thing I had in mind when I conceptualised this was simply to have fun designing it, starting with the event logo.

Internal Promotion.
SA utilised LED screens by the reception and LCD screens at the cafeteria to promote the private event. They also printed A0 posters and strategically placed these throughout the smelting plant. Promotion of the event took place a month before. There was a new information as to what's in store for the employees and their families on the day of the event.

Sohar's Enchanted Kingdom
One of the biggest challenges in setting up an event is the weather. The day before the event, some of our smaller tents were dislodged as it was overcast and was too windy. We had a bit of clear skies but the wind still was enough to make my technical guys nervous about the lights and the screens. We only raised the stage lights when we were half an hour away before the show opens. Employees and their families were happy at how the show turned out.

We could not raise the lights as the weather was quite windy. Windy days can be problematic as it can blow down tents, equipment, even the whole set-up!Giant foosballSetting up the gamesAdults testing the giant inflatablesOne of our crew testing the ridesFrom the water zone to the main areaTwo Mickeys!Trying to locate where the food stations areThe regions are proud of their heritage - local band picking up the paceWandering acts on stiltsStageGame booths getting mobbedSampling the snacks at the kioskGames at the water zoneWandering actsEvening entertainment.
